Students and crew leaders trek further north to visit the Ojibwe reservation at Lac du Flambeau (Lake of the Torches). Wayne Wolff, tribal fish hatchery manager, dishes out food for the rainbow trout...students get a kick out of watching the feeding frenzy!

The tour continues inside the tribe's state-of-the-art fish hatchery where eggs and fry are nurtured.

Later in the day we visit a re-creation of a traditional Ojibwe village "Wa-Swa-Goning" (the place where they spear fish by torchlight). Students explore essential items of village life, from wigwams and lodges to handmade items such as baskets, fish traps and canoes.

Nick Hockings, tribal elder and our tour guide, shows students how to start a fire (despite 40mph winds) using naturally available items.

Jonathan "Johnny Buckskin" Gilbert, Wildlife Section Leader for the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC), explains the importance of understanding Native American culture when formulating wildlife management goals.

A fireside chat with Jonathan explores tribal treaty rights, prompting an in-depth discussion.
